How I Work
An Inspiring Mentor
In 1990, not even 20 years of age, I was articled at Deloitte & Touche to an inspiring man: “OA” was a devout Muslim and this is important not for any other reason but because he had to be pretty resilient (and in a way) entrepreneurial to have struggled through the South African “system” in the 80/90s to have achieved his status. He always described himself as being a “Big Picture Man“, a man who was driven by being “Directionally Correct”: a concept that flies in the face of the requirement for precision- the very essence of a traditional accountant.
I’ve followed OA’s fine example. I’m not, for one moment, saying you’ll get away with neglecting the detail – what I am saying: is that no amount of detail is going to make your business work if you’re not looking at the big picture and steering it in the right direction. I’m an ideas person and I’m perfectly experienced, skilled and driven to look at the big picture for you. To me, the big picture is about vision, planning, feasibility and risk/return. Once we’ve got a handle on these concepts I will generate ideas on how to solve everyday challenges using a combination of process and technology.
With the above in mind, this is how I like to operate.
I need the opportunity to understand and relate to you and your business. I’m selective about who I work with – it’s pointless kidding each other about the business potential if it’s sadly lacking. I seek success.
Twenty years ago, when I walked into OA’s office, he’d usually look up from his desk and say “Don’t bring me problems, bring me solutions.” I’m solutions orientated. That’s why I’d prefer work with a client over the longer term. Challenges that small businesses throw at entrepreneurs are unpredictable, ever changing and always testing – you should be able to draft me in to throw a few ideas around – I’ll roll up my sleeves and help identify a pragmatic and cost-effective solution.
Retainer based relationships work best for everyone and that’s my preference but I’m also happy to perform a single piece of consultancy either to convince you of my qualifications or because you have an identifiable brief with a desired outcome.
In the course of working together, I’ll target every opportunity I can find for efficiency and automation. I’ll help you steer risky projects to successful completion. I’ll introduce you to trusted agencies and third parties I’ve learnt to trust and I will help you define and manage expectations. The associated cost savings and resulting improvements to your business will comfortably pay AoB’s professional fees and I like to prove that. I’m open to contingent billing as long as we can measure the outcome so we can share in the spoils of success.
Lastly on Geography and Travel: I’ve spent many years away from home in airports and been a slave to lengthy commutes. We live in Suffolk in the UK and my professional fees reflect my desire to read my daughters a bed time story most nights if I possibly can.
